I think part of why Diane makes people uncomfortable is because I think many people wallow in being broken adn think if they start putting in the effort someday then their life will get better and they will be less broken. And Diane does that and puts in so much effort and still can't fix herself, still stumbles and falls. And the audience is afraid of that. Afraid to accept that even if we try our hardest we might just not succeed.

I sincerely fell exactly like you about Jerry as a character, the most frustrating thing about him and why so many people hate him, is because how much of a remainder of one's own flaws he can represent, no one likes to to be reminded of you're own mistakes, and beyond that see someone that you can (begrudgingly) see yourself into get above they're pain better than you might ever be seen as a mockery of they're own insecurities in a subconscious way, point being, Jerry is the biggest example of projection in recent fiction for how people tend to react to anything coming from him
